Waiting to see if we flood

It’s been an extraordinarily wet summer. We are currently on “flood watch”. Ironically the weather today is better than it has been for some time. Where we live is OK as it’s on high ground, however there is a bridge between us and civilisation that could be subject to flooding in the next couple of days as it is downstream from the Warragamba dam which has a huge catchment area. There is an alternative route….but it’s a very long way around.

It was an excuse to go out and buy extra non-perishables….trouble is that “non-perishables” include some tasty things that we don’t normally have…. they may be gone long before any flood arrives!

Bird’s eye view

Willy Wagtail and "Tina"

We have a pair of wagtails who usually nest in the garden. They have beautiful little mud nests at a junction in the branches – just like a small tea cup. I’m not sure where they are nesting this year.

They love following the sheep around as they stir up flying insects in the grass as they eat. Yesterday one of them seemd to think Tina, one of our black suffolks, was a good bet.

Changing weather patterns

Why are weather patterns changing?

There is no doubt that weather patterns are changing around the world. We have a more localised problem.

For christmas I bought my husband a wireless weather station. We hitched it up, put in batteries and – hey presto – a digital display in the lounge. Inside temperature, outside temperature, barometric reading, weather prediction – plus wind speed and direction. That was OK until one of the resident kookaburras decided it was a good game to spin the wind monitor around and catch it in its beak! Hmm….
